More money is needed for tinnitus research
A JAMA Neurology report estimates that 14.4 percent of the global population has tinnitus. It noted that there is a lack of effective treatments and called for more investment in research into therapies for the condition.
Tinnitus is the perception of a sound, usually a ringing, whistling, rattling or hissing sound, felt in the ears or head, in the absence of an external acoustic stimulus. To date, there are no approved drugs to treat tinnitus, only certain therapies that enable people to live with the symptom. In its most serious form, it can affect people's mental and emotional health, ability to sleep and social well-being.
The JAMA Neurology report is the first to estimate the global prevalence of tinnitus and confirms at a global level the results of a European study published in November 2021 in Lancet Regional Health -Europe by the same authors. The authors say that the estimates place tinnitus among the leading causes of disability, and the lack of effective treatment options warrants a major investment in research in this area.
