Buzzing in the ears
Have you ever experienced buzzing, howling, ringing or buzzing in your ears without any external sound source? Then you may have tinnitus, a common symptom that can have many different causes and affect your quality of life. Here you will find out more about what tinnitus is, what can cause it and how you can get help.
What is tinnitus?
Tinnitus means that you hear an inexplicable sound in one or both ears. It can be a constant or a varying sound that only you can hear. The sound can be perceived differently from person to person and it can vary in one and the same person. Some experience an unexplained or strange sound, like a buzzing or buzzing in the head. Others experience vibrations in the ear, buzzing or ringing sounds. Some hear a beeping sound or howling in the ear, but just as often it is described as a whispering hiss or noise in the ear.
Tinnitus is not a disease, but a symptom of an underlying condition such as a hearing loss or an ear injury. Tinnitus is a common phenomenon. About 10-15% of the population experiences tinnitus and it occurs at all ages. There are various treatments that can help relieve your discomfort.
What causes tinnitus?
There are several different causes of tinnitus. The most common is excessive exposure to loud noises that damage the tiny hair cells in the inner ear. Tinnitus sounds are the result of your brain trying to compensate for the loss of hair cells.
Signs of tinnitus!
You hear a sound in one or both ears that no one else can hear. It can be a hissing, howling, ringing, roaring or other sound that varies in strength and pitch.
You feel that the sound gets louder when it is quiet around you or when you are stressed or tired.
Ringing in the ears can be a sign of tinnitus, a symptom that means you hear a ringing in your ears that only you can hear.
If you recognize any of these signs of tinnitus, you should contact a doctor or an audiologist for an examination and treatment.
Common causes of tinnitus:
- Exposure to loud noises
- Natural aging
- Middle ear infections
- Emotional stress
- Diabetes
- Adverse reactions to drugs
- Neck and head injuries
- Hyperacusis (intolerance to noise)
- Other untreated conditions such as Ménière's disease, Otitis (infections in the middle ear), etc.
How can tinnitus be treated?
Some examples of treatments for tinnitus are:
- Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) : CBT is a form of psychological treatment that helps you manage your thoughts and feelings about your tinnitus. You will learn strategies to reduce the stress, anxiety and irritation that tinnitus can cause.
- Tinearity - Tinnitus Retraining Therapy : TRT is a treatment method for tinnitus and sound hypersensitivity (hyperacusis) Tinearity consists of two small sound components that are attached to adapters that are then attached behind the ears. Via the audio components, white noise is generated directly into the ears via the skull bone, leaving the ear canals free. During treatment, we recommend that you listen to white noise 6-8 hours per day for 6-24 months.
- Sound therapy: Sound therapy involves using different types of background noise to distract you from the tinnitus sound. It can be natural sounds such as birds chirping or ocean waves, music or white noise.
There is no cure for tinnitus. But there are ways to alleviate the discomfort and reduce the impact on your daily life.
