My tinnitus disappeared
Can tinnitus go away on its own?
That tinnitus completely disappears by itself is unfortunately very unusual, but sometimes you can read headlines like "my tinnitus disappeared".
However, it is important to remember that tinnitus is a complex symptom that can have various causes and that there is no guarantee that tinnitus will disappear. The best thing is to seek help from a doctor or audiologist if you have problems with tinnitus.
However, there are exceptions where the tinnitus has completely disappeared or is greatly alleviated:
If tinnitus is treated with Tinnitus Retraining Therapy (TRT), which is a method where white noise is used in combination with CBT to accustom the brain to the sound and reduce its impact on the quality of life. It can take 6-24 months to complete the treatment. Read more about the origin of TRT and Tinnitus Retraining Therapy.
If the tinnitus is due to a single sound that was harmfully loud, such as an explosion, it may go away once the ear has healed from the injury. It can take up to six months.
If tinnitus is due to tension in the jaw, head or neck, it can go away or be alleviated through physical therapy, relaxation exercises and massage.
